Apparently there is a super-delicious treat in Canada that I've been waiting my whole life to discover:
Maple taffy on snow.
It's a very simple concept and it's as fun as it is yummy.
Here's the set-up: An open-air stand with pots of boiling maple syrup.
A Canadian that doesn't speak English and a big pit of shaved ice.
He pours long strips of maple syrup on the ice.
Lays tongue depressor-sized sticks at one end...
Then speaks the only English he DOES know: "45 seconds!"
There is no timer, but if you reach for it before 45 seconds, he firmly says, "No!"
So you wait a little longer.
Then a few seconds more. Just in case.
Then you roll your stick slowly toward the opposite end.
And enjoy!
FYI: I'm pretty sure it's not just maple syrup because it tastes like buttery goodness. And considering how many times we've been back to the stand, it might be sprinkled with crack.
